Meteortips.com completed - Review

Time to complete = 4 hours over 5 days.

Difficulty level       = Easy, but some concepts still went over my head.

Pro's                       = The author has saved the correct code at the end of each section on Github. This is a big advantage over something like Michael Hartl's book and many others which leave you crawling the web for hours looking for the answer to your mistake. This is a big pro for me and I would guess will become the norm in tutorials.

Cons                       = I got bored by the security bit. But I get bored very easily.

Programming for Beginners - Spaced repitition Flashcards - Anki

I have started using ANKI, in an attempt to remember some of what I have learned. My ability to retain programming concepts is very poor but this has begun to help.

If you take a few days off it feels like there is a lot to revise to try to get to it every day or second day for 10 minutes and don't overcrowd it with lots of new concepts. 2-3 ideas each day are enough for me at least.

Javascript for Absolute Beginners - Free Resources

5/27/2015

I keep reading that Javascript is the most important thing to learn so I began where I usually do. Codecademy.com. I found myself constantly going to the Q&A for answers sometimes just copy and pasting. The comments from other lazy people are encouraging though.

Initially I felt bad about this type of 'cheating'. But the reality is that its worse to just give up because you are constantly confused. I'm still struggling with this at the moment but I've tried a basic Meteor course which has picked up my interest in Javascript. Here is my order of Javascript progression/confusion

1. http://www.codecademy.com/en/tracks/javascript - Manageable but hard

2. http://eloquentjavascript.net/02_program_structure.html#c_kgxqlrIFy2 -Nate Siver recommends this. I found it too hard to start with so moved on to an easy Meteor program below.

3.  http://meteortips.com/first-meteor-tutorial/events/

4. From here I bounced back to JQuery in Codecademy and Angular.js - I haven't finished either of them but feel they are manageable. I'm just a bit lazy.

Ruby on Rails from Scratch - Free Resources

There are lots of Ruby on Rails Courses but the order in which you should approach them isn't clear. If you're learning Ruby on Rails  from scratch I recommend you try these free resources, in this order. This worked for me. When you hit a major roadblock in one though (hairpulling level), don't be afraid to begin another. Frustration is what led me to big drop offs in the past.

BEGINNER Level 1
. Codecademy http://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-rails/ ) - This has the basic principles but isn't as interesting as building your own application. Baserails is better.

BEGINNER Level 1
.*Baserails.com - By far the most practical and easy to follow guide to building a simply Application that has lots of dynamic elements. Managed to start using Git, Github and Heroku on this. I've forgotten a lot about them by now though.

BEGINNER Level 2
. A good course for practicing at this stage I think is http://curriculum.railsbridge.org/intro-to-rails/ . Similar simple practice at this stage can be found here. http://tutorials.jumpstartlab.com/projects/blogger.html

BEGINNER Level 3
. Everyone recommends Michael Hartls book but I found the format harder than baserails..com here it is though. https://www.railstutorial.org/book - Its still worth trying but if you find your app breaking don't spend hours looking for the bug. Move on and come back.

Meteor for Beginners

I have begun this free course and having completed the Coedcademy  Javascript course (95%), I find it easy enough to follow.

Not really sure how wise it is to jump into other frameworks when I am barely getting to grips with Rails and javascript as a language. But again I found this simple and fun so I thought that I would share it.
